Yes, distance Reiki can be practised without the practitioner being physically present. Distance Reiki Healing (also called remote or online Reiki) is a form of Reiki in which the practitioner offers healing energy to a recipient who may be in another room, another city or another continent, using specific Reiki symbols and focused intention. In my practice, clients receiving Reiki from a distance describe experiences very similar to those who sit with me in person, although research has not established how or whether this energy travels.
Reiki is a Japanese energy healing practice developed by Mikao Usui in the early 20th century. It is gentle, non-invasive and complementary: it is offered alongside medical care, never in place of it.
Can it really work when the practitioner and recipient are thousands of kilometres apart? Is it as effective as an in-person session? These were the questions I asked myself when I first began learning Reiki. As my training and practice evolved, so did my understanding.
Reiki is based on a spiritual understanding of energy that is not confined by geography. Our bodies have to travel from one place to another. Healing energy, as Reiki practitioners understand it, does not.
After all, energy does not need a visa to travel!
How Does Distance Reiki Healing Work?
Distance Reiki is practised through intention and energetic connection rather than physical touch. The practitioner uses specific Reiki symbols, together with focused intention to establish an energetic connection with the recipient and then channels Reiki to them as they would in person.
Within Reiki tradition, healing is also understood to extend beyond the usual limitations of time and space. I may therefore work with experiences from someone’s past, their present circumstances or an upcoming event.
A client might have an important meeting with a venture capitalist in two days. I may offer Reiki to that situation with the intention that whatever unfolds serves the highest good of everyone involved. It is not about controlling the outcome or guaranteeing a result.
As my practice deepened, I came to appreciate another idea: we are all interconnected. I sometimes picture existence as one giant bowl of energy, with invisible threads connecting us to one another and to the world around us. From this perspective, physical distance is no barrier to an energetic connection.
What Happens During a Distance Reiki Session?
A distance Reiki session begins with your consent, takes place at an agreed time while you rest or carry on with your day, and is followed by a check-in. You don’t need to be on a video call, meditate or even stay awake.
Here is how a session with me works:
- Consent: I ask for your permission before any healing work begins. For infants, young children or anyone unable to consent, I seek permission from a parent, guardian or legally authorised decision-maker, as appropriate.
- An agreed time: I begin my distance sessions early in the morning, India time. Most of my clients live in other parts of the world, so at that hour, some are working, others are resting and a few are sleeping soundly. Their physical presence is not required.
- The session itself: I connect with you using Reiki symbols and focused intention, and channel Reiki for the duration of the session. In my practice, this is approximately 5–6 hours.
- Check-in: After the session, I get in touch to ask how you are feeling and what you are noticing. I use your feedback to guide subsequent sessions.
What Does Distance Reiki Feel Like?
Some people describe warmth, tingling, deep relaxation or a sense of calm. Others feel nothing physical at all. Both experiences are normal. Everyone experiences it differently.
Some clients report sleeping better, feeling emotionally lighter or noticing changes in how they respond to difficult situations. A few are particularly sensitive and tell me they felt something in the exact area I was working on, despite being on another continent. Others notice no sensations whatsoever but describe changes over the following days.
I work with people across different age groups and circumstances, from infants and children to older adults. Some seek Reiki as a complementary practice while dealing with physical health concerns. Others are perfectly well and want support with personal growth, relationships, careers or finances.
Something does not have to be wrong with your life for you to seek Reiki.
One important distinction: feeling warmth does not prove that something has changed. It means you experienced warmth. What you notice is personal and subjective, so I do not treat a sensation as evidence of a medical or measurable energetic result. How you perceive energetic shifts may also vary from day to day.
Is Distance Reiki as Effective as In-Person Reiki?
In my experience, yes. I have not observed a consistent difference in the feedback from clients who attend in-person sessions and those who receive Reiki remotely. I now work predominantly through distance Reiki with clients internationally, and their experiences have steadily reinforced my confidence in this approach.
| Aspect | In-Person Reiki | Distance Reiki |
| Where you are | With the practitioner | Anywhere in the world |
| What you need to do | Sit or lie comfortably | Rest, work or sleep |
| Physical touch | Light hands-on contact or hands hovering | None |
| What clients report | Warmth, tingling, calm, better sleep | A similar range of experiences |
| Follow-up | In person | Messages or calls after the session |
| Scientific evidence | Medical effectiveness not reliably established | Medical effectiveness not reliably established |
That last row matters. My observations are personal and should not be mistaken for scientific proof that the two approaches are equally effective. Research has not established the proposed energetic mechanism or reliable medical benefits of Reiki, whether offered in person or remotely. I would rather you know that than hear it elsewhere.
Does Distance Reiki Work Immediately?
It varies from person to person and also depends on the circumstances they are dealing with. Some clients report feeling calmer or more relaxed after their very first session. Others describe gradual changes over several weeks. Experiences can fluctuate, and there is no fixed timeline or guaranteed outcome.
One thing I tell everyone: Reiki is not a magic wand.
Someone facing longstanding business difficulties cannot expect Reiki to clear their debts overnight. However, if they experience greater calm and emotional balance, they may find it easier to look at their circumstances clearly and take practical steps forward. This is the kind of change clients often describe, along with a greater sense of clarity, purpose and direction regarding their business.
My approach is to work consistently, listen to what clients tell me and respect each person’s individual circumstances.
A Note Before You Book
Distance Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive spiritual practice that can be offered without physical proximity. It is not a substitute for medical treatment, professional advice or practical action. If you are unwell, please consult your doctor. Reiki can be offered alongside appropriate medical care.
Whether someone is sitting across from me or asleep on the other side of the world, the principle guiding my practice remains the same: energy does not need a visa to travel.
If you would like to explore distance Reiki healing, you are welcome to book a consultation so we can discuss what you are looking for.
Frequently Asked Questions About Distance Reiki
How long does a distance Reiki session take?
A typical distance Reiki session with me lasts approximately 5–6 hours. I do not offer single or trial sessions. Instead, I offer a package of 24 sessions, working with clients from Monday to Friday and sending Reiki every morning for approximately 5–6 hours.
You don’t need to set this time aside yourself. I offer Reiki at the agreed time while you rest, work or sleep, and we check in afterwards.
Do I need to believe in Reiki for it to work?
Within Reiki practice, belief is not considered a requirement. Many of my clients begin as sceptics. Being open to the experience may help you observe how you feel, but I offer the session in the same way whether or not you are convinced.
Can distance Reiki be sent to children, pets or someone in hospital?
Yes, distance Reiki may be offered in these circumstances, subject to appropriate consent and permissions. For children or anyone unable to consent, I seek permission from a parent, guardian or legally authorised decision-maker, as appropriate. For someone in hospital, Reiki is offered only as a complementary practice and never as a replacement for medical care.
Is distance Reiki safe alongside medication or medical treatment?
Reiki is non-invasive and does not involve administering medication. It is generally considered a low-risk complementary practice, although its medical benefits have not been established. Continue any treatment your doctor has prescribed, and consult your healthcare provider if you have concerns about combining complementary practices with your medical care.
How often should I have a distance Reiki session?
In my practice, I offer a minimum package of 24 sessions rather than individual or trial sessions. These are conducted from Monday to Friday, with regular communication and follow-up throughout the process.
How will I know the session happened?
This is one reason I check in with my clients after their sessions. Some report sensations during Reiki, while others notice changes in how they feel or sleep over the following days. Even when someone does not notice anything immediately, I remain in regular contact to understand their experience and how they are progressing. The absence of sensations does not necessarily indicate whether a session took place or whether it produced any particular effect.
